Professional Experience: Stephen Dynia moved to Jackson, Wyoming and established his firm in 1993 after working in the design department of SOM in New York in the 80’s and early 90’s. That abrupt change was motivated by a desire to pursue architecture in a natural environment, unfettered by the politics of corporate work. In the dozen years since his firm has taken a design leadership role in the community, creating buildings that turn the raw material of site, program and structure into an architecture that investigates form, space, light, and texture. Stephen received his architectural degree from RISD, where he explored of the essential nature of objects and gained an understanding of architecture as art. Before and after attending RISD, Stephen worked in the office of Warren Platner, an offspring of Eero Saarinen, who introduced the craft of architecture. SOM taught Stephen survival, and sparked a romance for those early years when under Gordon Bundshaft they brought modernism to the corporate world. Growing up in New Haven gave Stephen an awareness of urban renewal and its attendant glory and horror. More recently, Stephen was elected a director of the Wyoming chapter of the AIA and serves on numerous arts organization boards in Jackson. These experiences helped to create a firm culture respectful of context and inspired by invention. Numerous Western Mountain and Wyoming chapter AIA design awards attest to the firm’s success. Current projects cover a wide range of building-types and locations including a mixed-use housing development in Jackson and Minneapolis, institutional work in Jackson, work in California and Montana, plus numerous residential projects of varying scale throughout the region. |
